My Handpicked Story

My foray into craft fairs began last year, I had designed an illustrated print featuring all things Dorking and was looking for places to sell my work. I began by posting links to my Etsy site on Facebook forums and luckily Jason spotted my link.

Over a pint in the Old House at Home one sunny Friday afternoon he invited me to join the Handpicked team and I gladly said yes please!

The fairs have given me new opportunities in more ways than one. I’ve been able to sell a range of my Surrey products - having now created designs for Reigate and Leigh too. It’s lovely to see people spot my framed Dorking print from a far and then come over to point out the places they recognize.

I’ve also received commissions for my ‘Illustrated Timelines’ which are personalized pieces of artwork I design as wedding, birthday and anniversary gifts.

At the May event I met Jacqui Hamlin who had been organising artists to paint the building site hoardings in Meadowbank Park and she kindly asked if i'd be interested in creating a mural. I’ve worked on a few mural projects before for event spaces and in hospitals, and am always looking for new projects. The brief was broad so I stuck to my Dorking roots and designed a ‘Welcome to Dorking’ piece including typography, woodland leaves and a Denbies inspired bunch of grapes. I painted the piece in stages over a few days, all by hand. The text was a challenge but I wanted to challenge myself with some sign-writing.

It was a great experience painting in the park and as people passed I received lots of supportive comments. A few children wanted to help so I let them help me fill in one of the leaves. Being situated next to the ice cream truck also had its merits when I was given a free Mr Whippy.

The finished mural can now be seen at the entrance to Meadowbank Park near the Malthouse.

In the new year hopefully the artworks will also be moved to Dorking Deepdene station - I can’t wait to see my mural welcoming people as they arrive. Without Handpicked for Dorking I wouldn’t have had such an exciting opportunity, so a big thank you to Jason and all the other stall holders that make the events such fun.

See you at the Christmas Market.
